Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

The constant doorbell ringing, flashing lights, and visitors in costumes can all cause anxiety in both dogs and cats.
Many pets show signs of fear, such as shaking, hiding, barking, panting, or trying to escape. These are more than just behaviors; they are signals that your pet is feeling overwhelmed.

Why Halloween Can Cause Anxiety in Pets

From your pet’s perspective, Halloween changes everything that feels familiar. The door opens over and over, new smells and decorations appear, and people come inside wearing masks or costumes that look nothing like the humans your pet knows.

Dogs and cats who are sensitive to sound or easily startled may react with fear or confusion. Loud noises, strange movements, and glowing decorations can make them feel unsafe.

Veterinarian-Approved Tips to Keep Pets Calm

1. Create a quiet retreat
Set up a comfortable space where your pet can relax away from the noise and activity. Include their favorite bed, blanket, and toys. Playing soft music or keeping a TV on low volume can help cover outside sounds.

2. Avoid forcing costumes
Some pets enjoy dressing up, but many feel restricted or anxious in clothing. If your pet seems uncomfortable, it is best to skip the costume altogether.

3. Keep candy and decorations out of reach
Chocolate, raisins, and anything containing xylitol are toxic to pets. Glow sticks, candles, and fake cobwebs can also pose hazards if chewed or swallowed.

4. Try calming aids
Pheromone diffusers, snug-fitting anxiety wraps, or supplements can help pets relax. Ask your veterinarian which options are safest and most effective for your pet’s needs.

5. Check collars and microchips
Before Halloween night, confirm that your pet’s ID tag and microchip information are current. Frightened pets can slip through open doors in a panic, and this simple step helps them get home safely.

During Trick-or-Treating Hours

Keep pets indoors to prevent accidental escapes. If your dog or cat becomes stressed when strangers visit, place them in a separate room with soft lighting and calm background noise.
Avoid leaving pets alone outside, as unexpected sounds and costumes can cause fear or confusion. If you plan to be out of the house, make sure your pet has a secure, quiet place to stay with plenty of water and comfort items.

After the Festivities

Once the night quiets down, take a few minutes to help your pet unwind.
