Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Questions? We Have Answers

If your dog may be at risk, schedule an evaluation today and get answers from one of the leading experts in the field.

Hello, dear pet parents! It’s a question that has puzzled many cat owners for ages: “Can my feline friend taste something sweet or spicy?” As your trusted local veterinary clinic, (), we’re here to help shed light on this mystery, providing you with insights based on veterinary science.

If you have any further questions or wish to book an appointment, please call us now.

Understanding Cat Taste Buds – Sweet and Spicy Explained

Cats have quite a unique palate compared to their human counterparts. Where we possess roughly 9,000 taste buds, cats have only about 470. This significant difference plays a role in their ability to detect different flavors, especially when it comes to sweet and spicy tastes.

Feline Taste Receptors: Why Can’t Cats Taste Sweet?

The common assumption is that all mammals experience taste similarly. However, research has found that cats lack the taste receptor for sweet, making them ‘sweet-blind’. This lack of the sweet taste receptor is due to a genetic mutation in cats that occurred many years ago. Essentially, their tongues do not have the necessary protein to detect the sweet flavors that we humans so often crave.

Unlike dogs and humans who find sweet foods irresistible, your feline companion is unlikely to pounce on a piece of cake or candy. Instead, they are obligate carnivores, driven by a diet high in protein from meat.

That being said, if your cat appears to enjoy a bite of your ice cream now and then, it’s more likely they’re enjoying the fat content rather than any sweetness. So next time you see that curious whiskered face next to your dessert, remember, it’s not the sugar they’re after!

Can Cats Taste Spicy Foods?

On to our next question: can cats taste spicy food? Well, the answer is not as straightforward. While cats don’t have specific receptors for ‘spiciness’, they are highly sensitive to bitter and sour tastes, which can often be present in spicy foods.

What we perceive as ‘spicy’ is a pain response triggered by a compound called capsaicin, which is found in chili peppers and other spicy foods. Cats, however, do not respond to capsaicin in the same way humans do, as their taste receptors are different.

It’s important to remember that while they might not taste spicy in the same way we do, spicy foods can still cause discomfort or even harm to your cat. Capsaicin can cause symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, or other gastrointestinal issues. Thus, it’s always best to keep your spicy salsa or hot curry out of your paw’s reach.

The world of flavors for our furry friends is quite different from ours. While they may not have a sweet tooth or crave spicy cuisine, their finely tuned sense of taste helps them discern their preferred diet – protein-rich meats!

Remember, understanding your pet’s dietary needs and habits is an integral part of ensuring their health and happiness. If you have further questions about your cat’s diet or need to schedule a routine check-up, reach out to your trusted vet, (). We’re here to provide the best care for your furry family members!
